The McCarthy Cowl is unique in that the larger needle size allows for a cozy, breathable cowl with the perfect neck drape. It provides warmth without feeling constricted. Finished size is: 9 inches tall and 13 inches wide.

The single page pattern is written for super bulky yarn (6 weight) on US19 (15mm) 24 inch circular needles, BUT the cowl can be knit on 32 inch circulars if that’s all you have. It also can be knit on US17 (12.75mm) if your yarn is on the thin side. Instructions on how to determine the weight of your yarn is included. (WPI is the number of Wraps Per Inch. That number determines just how bulky your yarn is. More details are provided in the pattern to help you choose the right yarn.)

The pattern includes instructions for making the cowl taller than the 9 inches that one full skein (106 yards) of Lion Brand Thick and Quick allows for. It also provides an alternative to Super Bulky in 2 strands of Bulky yarn held together. You will need 190 yards of bulky yarn if you want your cowl to be 10.5 inches tall and 12 inches wide.

I consider this a beginner friendly pattern that requires the following skills:

Knit on circular needles
Long tail cast on
Join in the round
Knit
Purl
Standard Bind off
