The Mechanic scarf is part of the Rally Team series: this one is for the person who keeps the car on the road and moving. It has two team-mate scarves: The Driver and The Navigator. My father is both the driver and the mechanic of our classic rally team and I am the navigator - the one who makes all the mistakes.

Worked in worsted weight wool, this design pairs a modified version of Barbara Walker’s fascinating ‘Cam’ cable with rolling lace. Together, they evoke the motion of the car’s interlinked machinery.

The knitting does require attention, with patterning on both sides and some unusual cable crosses. It produces a handsome textured scarf with fascinating twists and turns.

The length of the scarf can be adjusted to suit the wearer or, if required, the amount of yarn available. At 20 cm (8 in), it is a generous width and so it is very good for frosty days.

The scarf is best worked in a smooth woollen yarn for warmth and stitch definition. A yarn with yardage of about 200 m (220 yds) per 100 grams is recommended. A solid or very slightly varied colour will best show the cables and texture.
