The Mermaid Scarf
This pattern has been discontinued.
This scarf was inspired by the folk ballad “The Mermaid”, which tells the tale of a ship wrecked during a storm after the captain spots a mermaid in the water, as mermaids were viewed as a sign of imminent disaster. The asymmetrical shape allows the shawl to flow and the garter stripes are squishy and drape well. Manos del Uruguay’s Alegría in “Teal” reminded me of a green-tinted sea and “Agave” made me think of corals and bright sea creatures lurking below the waves. The arcade stitch crochet border looks a bit like fish scales, like the tail of a treacherous mermaid waiting to lure sailors into the deep. This shawl, however, will keep you warm and cosy on dry land, and knits up rather quick due to the simple garter stitch.
This shawl is an asymmetric cornucopia-shaped shawl. The body is worked in garter stitch with stripes alternating the two colors, and the border is crocheted in arcade stitch using just the main color. The simple garter stitch makes for a quick knit body and the crochet border adds a bit of fun to the process!
