I made this toque for mother-in-law (hence the name), but it is a unisex design that looks good on just about anyone. It uses a simple repeated pattern and is best done in a soft, lofty worsted merino like Malabrigo Rios or Manos del Uruguay Gloria (probably two of the softest yarns you’ll ever use).

The pattern listed makes an adult large, and with the folded brim it is stretchy and structured enough to accommodate an XL or a medium in a pinch. You can increase or decrease by 12 stitches if needed (i.e. for a youth size or someone with an enormous head) but I wouldn’t recommend increasing the needle size past 4.5mm (US 7), as this pattern benefits from being a bit more dense rather than drapey.

Materials:

1 skein Malabrigo Rios, 210 yards/100 grams (pictured is Ravelry Red)
4mm (US 6) 40 cm (16”) circular needle
4mm (US 6) DPNs
Stitch marker
