The Miller Maiden’s Scarf is knitted in two parts from the bottom up and grafted at the center. Afterwards, stitches are picked up from the provisional cast on for the crochet chain edging.

Links are provided for techniques to cast on provisionally and work nupps. There are also instructions to change the width and length of the scarf.

The pattern is written for a single colour only. If you wish to knit the scarf in two colours, then use equal amounts of both colours and knit each part in a separate colour.

The scarf’s name is inspired by “Mit dem grünen Lautenband” from Franz Schubert’s Die Schöne Müllerin song cycle:

Nun schlingst du in die Locken dein
Das grüne Band gefällig ein,
Du hast ja’s Grün so gern.
Dann weiß ich, wo die Hoffnung wohnt,
Dann weiß ich, wo die Liebe thront,
Dann hab’ ich’s Grün erst gern.
