The Mini Mesh Cardigan: Intermediate Level Knitting Pattern
Although only simple techniques were used and even though pattern testers with a wide range of skill were able to complete this cardigan, I would still suggest it to intermediate knitters and up. This level assessment is because of the unique construction, made to measure nature of the pattern and the fact that crochet is introduced to you through video tutorials for the garment assembly. Along with the written instructions, I created 6 video tutorials meant specifically for this pattern that walk you through all of the key steps of this garment. Because of these tutorials, someone who is very comfortable learning new techniques could make this cardigan.
Materials:
- Needles: 4.5mm (US 7) needles or size needed to obtain gauge. If you choose to use straight needles you will need a set of double pointed needles to knit the i-cord tie. If you use circular needles that is the only set of needles you will need.
- Yarn: approximately 425-1100 yards of worsted weight cotton or mohair yarn. If you are using cotton, 100% Cotton yarn is strongly recommended to ensure the fabric has the correct stability. If you are using mohair (or similar fluffy fiber type) a blend can be used, for best results you want it to be at least 30% mohair. (It is not recommended but you can choose to use acrylic or wool yarn, just make sure that the blocked swatch is able to hold its shape). For best results a solid color is recommended. Note: This pattern is made to measure for the best fit so I can’t give exact yarn amounts. I suggest looking at the testers gallery and finding a tester that made a size similar to the one you will be making, I created a story highlight on my Instagram account that contains all of the information in the testers gallery. If possible, I always recommend having an extra skein just in case. Other supplies:
- Crochet hook for assembly that matches your needle size
- Tapestry needle for weaving in loose ends
- Approximately 8-10 removable stitch markers
- Scissors to cut your yarn
- (Optional) Flexible measuring tape to accurately find your size
- (Optional) Row counter, this is the best way to ensure that you panels are the same length.
Gauge: 13 stitches by 20 rows in mesh pattern = 4 in by 4 in (10 cm by 10 cm) square, blocked.
The pattern is designed to fit women with a 30-56 in / 76-142 cm bust. It can fit up to a 58 in / 147 cm bust if you are okay with not having positive ease. There are a bunch of customizations that can be made to the overall fit of the pattern because of the made to measure nature of the pattern.
A huge thank you to all of the pattern testers! Without them releasing this pattern would not have been possible! You can find them on Instagram at:
