The Mushroom Pot Holder from THE NATURE COLLECTION

Bringing a bit of nature indoors.

A little about mushrooms:

Mushrooms have been used in foods and medicinally for thousands of years. Continuing to grow in popularity in and out of the kitchen, mushrooms “are neither a plant or animal food. They are a type of fungus that contains a substance called ergosterol, similar in structure to cholesterol in animals. Ergosterol can be transformed into vitamin D with exposure to ultraviolet light. Mushrooms vary in appearance with more than 10,000 known types, but generally they are distinguished by a stem, fleshy rounded cap, and gills underneath the cap.”

About the pattern:

This pot holder features a shape of a mushroom itself, with the stem placed at bottom, and topped with a mushroom cap and gills. The pot holder measures 8” x 9” / 20.32 cm x 22.86 cm, allowing enough of a surface for most pot and pan bases.

To bring a clean and finished edge to the piece, we have inserted an i-cord bind off around the perimeter. This design is tailored for a fun and finished look, allowing a clean edge to tie the project together and provide a nice ‘stop’ for the edge of a pot or pan.

In contrast to our napkin rings and coaster, this pattern utilizes the yarn being held double - having two strands being used together throughout the project, along with the needle used, allows for more of a dense fabric. Pots and pans can be quite warm - so we wanted to ensure that your countertops are kept safe when using this at home.

To allow more of a stable center, the pot holder is knit using stranded colorwork. Having the additional colors “float” behind the project while working across allows for additional cushion and thickness. We also opted for the oval shape to pair well with the pots and pans in your kitchen, as it has a large surface area for use. This pot holder when finished measures 9” / 22.86 cm wide and 8” / 2.32 cm long from top to bottom.
