Gauge is not crucial , alternate yarns can be used, may however effect the yarn quantity required, and size. Directions included in pattern to upsize your cowl, with both yarn & Hook variations.

Test Cowls I used Bendigo Woolen Mills 8ply tweed , approximately 140g used. Lighter DK sample I used yarn from Casual Fashion Queen
