The Nameless And The Name
In streams of light I clearly saw
The dust you seldom see
Out of which the nameless makes
A name for one like me
-- Love Itself lyric and music by Leonard Cohen
The Nameless And The Name is an asymmetrical triangular shawl that is started with just one stitch. The main body of the shawl is worked in an eyelet pattern like dust motes falling through a wedge of sunlight. The border is begun by working across the end of the main body, then rotating the work and picking up stitches along the bottom edge of the shawl. The border stitch motif represents the word “beloved,” in keeping with the theme of the song.
Materials Needed:
- @400 yards of fingering weight yarn
- 4mm (US 6) needles or size needed for gauge
- 19-23 stitch markers in various colours
Optional Materials:
- cable needle
- blunt darning needle for weaving ends
Gauge: 20 sts x 28 rows = 4” in unblocked eyelet motif
Note that I do not consider gauge essential for shawls. Rather, I recommend getting a fabric you like and going from there. However, if you have a limited amount of yarn then matching the pattern gauge is important.
Gauge is given for the unblocked fabric because the rate of blocking varies between people.
Pattern Instruction Format:
The pattern is entirely written; you do not need to refer to the charts to work this pattern.
The pattern is almost entirely charted; there is one row of the pattern for which there is only written instructions. That row is conveniently repeated on the chart page where it is relevant.
