The Nonsense Beanie
The Nonsense Beanie pattern is an Intermediate level knitting pattern and it’s the perfect stash buster project! You can choose to use a set number of colors (the amount recommended in the pattern is 7) or you can choose to use up all of your yarn scraps by never using the same color more than once! This hat has 2 adult sizes and is constructed from the bottom up with a folded brim. If this is your first time doing colorwork I have made the pattern as accessible as possible! Detailed videos tutorials for all of the techniques used in this pattern are linked in the PDF and there is also a written tutorial with photos for the folded hem technique used to create the brim of the hat. You have the option of following written out pattern instructions that are color coded or if you prefer you also have the option of following the colorwork charts and my favorite part about this pattern is the colorwork pattern is customizable to you! You can mix and match the all of the colorwork charts apart of the Nonsense pattern series however you like (please note: at the time of this patterns release I have not released any other Nonsense patterns yet, but I have several samples on my needles and will hopefully be making the rest of the patterns in the series available soon!)!
Sizing: Measure the circumference of your head, add or subtract the desired amount of ease and select the size with a finished measurement that is closest to your measurement + or - the chosen ease.
- Beanies are meant to be somewhat snug so they don’t fall off, so you want anywhere from -2 to +1 in / -5 to +2.5 cm of ease. For example: my head circumference is 23 in (58.5 cm) and for both of my hats I made size 2. Size 1 Finished Measurement: 18 in / 45.5 cm Size 2 Finished Measurement: 24 in / 61 cm
Gauge: 20 sts by 28 rows of stockinette following the gauge swatch colorwork chart in the pattern = 4 in (10 cm) square blocked
Materials:
- Needles: 4.5 mm (US 7) 16 in / 40.5 cm circular needles or the size needed to obtain gauge. DPNs or needles with a longer cable length can also be used if you prefer.
- Yarn: 7 colors of worsted (#4) weight yarn or however many colors of worsted (#4) weight yarn that you choose to use. The amount of yarn used for a fitted beanie is approximately 105 g (124 g) / 3.7 oz (4.37 oz). The amount of yarn used for a slouchy beanie is approximately 120 g (145 g) / 4.23 oz (5.11 oz). Divide these amounts by the number of colors you are using to find out approximately how many grams/ounces you need of each color. Note: each color is not used for exactly the same amount of stitches, so the amount needed for each color will vary. You may end up using more of some colors and less of others, especially if you are following the charts of your choosing. This is just a way to find a rough estimate.
- Other Supplies: 4 removeable stitch markers (one of them must be unique), a measuring tool, a tapestry needle and scissors.
A huge shoutout to everyone on the testing team! Without their help releasing this pattern would not have been possible! Be sure to check out their Instagram accounts to see more of the incredible things they have made!
