The ‘Nooch is the local nickname for the Wynoochee (Y-NOO-chee) River which wends its way from the Olympic National Park down to the Chehalis River and then out to the Pacific Ocean. These cowls blend the colors of the Olympic rain forest—the fog, clear waters, and deep shadows—using variations of garter slip stitches. One version of the cowl is knit in the round, the other is knit end to end, joined with Kitchener stitch, and buttons are added for fun and contrast.

Techniques Used
Provisional crochet cast on, slipping stitches as if to purl, picking up stitches, working from charts, Kitchener stitch for joining, and, for Drifting the ‘Nooch only, using a crochet hook for casting off the finished edges.

Yarn
Three 200 yard skeins of worsted weight yarn in different colors (shown here in Light Grey, Aquamarine, and Noire) will make both cowls if knit to gauge, and colors are used as indicated.

Kits from Jorstad Creek Yarns include the pattern.
