The Patch Sweater (Junior)
The Patch Sweater is knit from top-down in sections. No section or yoke is identical except for the arms. The back yoke is knit first back and forth using six stitches: Seed, stockinette, ribbing, Hurdle, Andalusian and Irish Moss. Then the back yoke is bound off in ribbing. The shoulders are then attached individually to the back yoke, and joined together to form the front yoke. The front yoke is worked back and forth using six stitches: Irish Moss, Seed, garter, stockinette, Hurdle, ribbing and Andalusian. Then the front yoke is bound off in ribbing. The neckline is worked by picking up stitches around the neckline and work in ribbing, then folded over and bound off.
The sides are sewn together, leaving space for the armholes. Finally, the sleeves are worked individually by picking up stitches along the armholes. The sleeves are worked identically using three stitches: Andalusia, Diamond Brocade and Hurdle. The cuffs are ribbed and then bound off. A simple 3-row stockinette divides the patch sections.
The Patch Sweater is knit using three colors. It is important to twist the yarn on the WS of work when changing colors so that gaps are not made in the work. This means twisting the yarn when working the RS of a knit stitch, so the twisted yarn appears on the WS. You can see how to twist the yarn by looking at this video on intarsia knitting. The Patch Sweater can also be knit using one color. In this case, I recommend using a sm in between the different stitch styles.
