THE RETURN of HAT JANUARY: PATTERN I.
This sock-weight beanie is an easy knit with an interesting construction, based around the idea of garter stitch functioning as ribbing.
You can knit a fully reversible version (recommended), which results in a pretty thick hat (seriously, you may want to size up, as the whole hat feels more snug this way) with more custom design options (wild scraps on one side, somber consistency on the other?).
Or you can knit a simpler version, which keeps the featured plush garter stitch but reduces the time and materials invested.
Because I’ve opted to include a few variations for this simple design, this .PDF is denser/wordier than usual.
Materials:
- 375-500 yards of soft sock yarn
- 1 16” circular needle in US2-3/2.75-3.25mm, or size needed for gauge.
- 1 set if 5 double-pointed needles in size needed for gauge
- Tapestry needle
- crochet hook, size B/2.25mm, or size suited to yarn
- scrap yarn for provisional crochet cast-on
- removable stitch markers
Measurements:
Knit this hat in S(M, L): 9.25(10.25, 11.25)“/23(26, 29)cm tall by 8.5(9, 9.5)”/22(23, 24)cm across, measured flat and without tension. Fit should have some negative ease, and M/L should fit most average adults.
