The Road to Tintagel
As a holiday gift, this pattern is free through the end of 2024.
This shawl was inspired by the legends of Tintagel Castle on the coast of Cornwall. It is a rectangular lace shawl with optional tassels along the short ends. Two lace patterns alternate between sections of stripes. Instructions are included to make the shawl longer, wider, or more narrow. This pattern works well with solids, gradients, tonals or lightly speckled yarns. While the sample was knit with fingering weight yarn, this pattern could also be worked in lace, sport, or light DK/worsted weight yarn. You will likely want to adjust the length and width if you use a lighter or heavier weight yarn. You will also need more yarn if you make it longer and/or wider.
Materials
Yarn
Main Color - Pendragon Fingering from Avalon Springs Farm, 555 yds/507 m, one skein. Sample used approximately 500 yds in the color Fairy Wings.
Contrasting Colors - Dragon Whelps from Avalon Springs Farm, fingering weight, 100 yds/91 m. Sample used five skeins in various shades of blue.
Needles - US size 4 (3.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge below. 32”/80 cm circular recommended. If you are using a yarn different from the sample, use a needle that gives you a fabric you like.
Gauge - 20 sts by 26 rows equals 4”/10 cm in Lace A and B, blocked. Gauge is not overly important as long as you are happy with the fabric. If you would like to knit a test swatch, cast on 24 sts and work Rows 1-18 of Lace A on page3 to see if you like the fabric. Adjust needles if needed.
Miscellaneous- darning needle for weaving in ends
