The Rory Gilmore Sweater
I’ve been searching high and low for a pattern to knit the lovely sweater Rory wears in the first episode of Gilmore Girls, but alas, I had no success. So, I decided to make the pattern myself. This is inspired by the sweater she wears – I have made a couple of adjustments due to my own tastes and for ease of pattern.
For example, from what I can see in screenshots, Rory’s sweater utilizes the seed stitch, but I used moss stitch instead. I also made the center cables simpler for my own peace of mind and I opted out of doing a roll neck and hem because I don’t personally like the look (and the yarn I used is thick and I felt that would look odd as a roll neck). Switching to a seed stitch instead of moss stitch and adding a roll neck is simple enough if you really want the look of Rory’s sweater (there are plenty of youtube tutorials out there if you need help!), but you would need to be a more experienced cable knitter to modify the center cable.
This sweater is knit flat in four pieces (front, back, 2 sleeves). You will need to sew together the shoulders of the front and back panels before knitting the neck, which is knit in the round. There are no cable charts. Each cable section has a pattern repeat and the instructions are comprised of following those repeats in their correct location on the sweater.
I need to make this VERY clear: THERE IS ONLY ONE SIZE. However, you can easily make adjustments by adding or subtracting the amount of stitches you have in the moss stitch sections of the pattern (2 stitches = 1 inch). This sweater is meant to fit oversized and the finished measurements are:
- Bust: 24 in. flat (48 in. circumference)
- Hem to shoulder: 29 in. --> you can obviously shorten or lengthen it to fit your needs
- Drop shoulder sleeve (wrist to seam): 19 in.
- Sleeve circumference (shoulder): 16 in.
- Wrist circumference: 8 in.
- Gauge in moss stitch: 8 stitches across = 4 inches, 6.5 stitches tall = 4 inches
You will need 6-7 skeins of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick yarn in one color (I used fisherman!)
