The Rose Fern Scarf
Lace knitting has traditionally been taught by knitting samplers - a collection of different lace patterns worked one after another.
This sampler scarf was developed for a class in lace knitting. It can be worked in either fingering or lace weight yarn. It uses the following techniques - cast on, cast off, knit, purl, increase by yarnover and double yarnover, decreases and double decreases, picking up stitches from an edge, grafting and reading charts.
There are two options for the top and bottom lace edging - one is a simpler sawtooth edging, and the other a more elaborate and challenging edging which combines three elements: faggotting, a leaf motif, and a sawtooth edging. The scarf is designed to be made with one skein of a luxurious yarn, and to make use of every precious inch of that skein. It is made in two pieces, which are grafted together, so that the ends can be made to match each other, and so that all of the skein can be used up.
The pattern is written with charts only, and does not have stitch by stitch directions. It does not include instructions for beading.
