The Schoolcraft Cowl is a beginner friendly cowl pattern stitched in the garter stitch (all knit stitches). You can use straight or circular needles (minimum cord length of 16 inches). This is the perfect ‘distraction knit’ as I like to call patterns that don’t take concentration. Sometimes we all need a distraction from the real world and The Schoolcraft Cowl provides that.

There isn’t a gauge test for this cowl because you are going to measure the final length of the piece before seaming together. That measurement is more important than gauge. The needle sizes are not your typical needles used for worsted, bulky, or super bulky yarn but that is intentional. The bigger the needle the bigger the squish factor in the cowl, but not TOO much that there are holes in your work. This cowl is meant to keep you warm on blustery days.

Many of my pattern testers were beginning knitters and they confirmed that this is a doable pattern for new knitters. It’s a great way to practice your tension and find your rhythm while still creating something beautiful and functional.

YARN / NEEDLE REQUIREMENTS:
175 yards of SUPER BULKY Yarn & 16.00mm (US 19) needles
275 yards of BULKY yarn & 8.00mm (US11) needles
305 yards of WORSTED Yarn & 6.0 mm (US10) needles

If you don’t have enough of one color you CAN make this a striped cowl by adding new colors to your work.
