The Seven Dwarfs' Stocking Caps
The first feature-length animated film from The Walt Disney Studios, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) combined full color, sound, and cel animation to create a movie experience like nothing audiences had ever seen. Centering on Snow White and her complicated relationship with her stepmother, the Queen, the kind and hard-working Seven Dwarfs provided aid to the heroine and comic relief to the audience. Before settling on Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy, other names like Awful,
Baldy, Burpy, Dizzy, Jumpy, Lazy, and Wheezy were considered for the Dwarfs. The youngest of the seven, Dopey is the only Dwarf without a beard and was also briefly considered for the role of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice in Fantasia (1940), only to have it go to Mickey Mouse. While the film was nominated for best musical score at 1938’s Academy Awards®, Walt Disney took home a special award for the film in 1939, featuring a full-size Oscar® statue for Snow White, accompanied by seven mini Oscars® representing the Seven Dwarfs.
It’s off to work you go! Started from the brim up beginning with a provisional cast on, these slouchy replicas of the Seven Dwarfs’ hats match the original colors in the film and commence with a turned-in hem. Letters identifying the owner of each hat are duplicate stitched on before the hem is turned and joined, allowing you to represent your favorite dwarf or personalize it with the alphabet charts provided. Knit in the round and increased out with M1s, these hats can be made as slouchy as you like. With sizing from child through adult, you can make one for all the Grumpys, Happys, or Sleepys in your clan!
