Famous for its good beer, Hobbit-sized rooms, and forgetful barman, the Prancing Pony meant comfort on the road for travelers. With a pint of ale and some hearty food, a hobbit could happily learn all the gossip in Bree. These socks feature a horseshoe motif, “prancing” down the foot. They’re a rather simple knit with one cable stitch and a bit of basic lace, so a relative beginner to sock knitting can feel more comfortable giving these a try.

Skill Level: Beginning-Intermediate; while not terribly complicated, these do involve some basic lace stitches and one medium-sized cable
Materials: Approx. 330-360 yds / 300-330 m of sock yarn. I recommend a solid or only mildly tonal color. The socks pictured are a size large and used approximately 350 yds / 320m of Cephalopod’s Skinny Bugga! (80% superwash merino, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon) in the colorway “Purple Soldier Fly.”
Tools: A cable needle (if necessary), and the standard sock tools (measuring tape, scissors, & tapestry needle)
Needles: US1 (2.25mm) sock needles (The pattern is written for DPNs, but Magic Loop knitters can easily adapt using stitch markers)
Gauge: 8 stitches and 12 rounds per 1 inch / 2.5cm in stockinette
Sizing: Small (Large) size measures 8 inches / 20cm (9 inches / 22.5cm) in circumference. Leg height, ankle circumference, and foot length are all adjustable to fit and preference.
