I absolutely love dragons! So naturally when I saw a project using scales on Pinterest, I had to give it a try. I first created this hat as an experiment working with the scale beads and got addicted to this technique. It is not as difficult as it seems! I’m confident that if you can knit a basic stockinette stitch hat, then you can add the sequins.

The hat fits almost the same as a typical knitted beanie or slouch beanie depending on which one you are creating. Keep in mind, however, that the scales add weight to the hat. I tend to use 2 or 3 bobby pins while wearing this hat to be sure that it stays in place. Get creative with the scale colors and make stripes, checkers, or any other design!

The crochet hook is used to place the dragon scales, there is no need to know how to crochet! I’ve included a link below to a tutorial for how to insert a scale. The video uses beads, but you would use the same technique with the scales. The only thing to be aware of is that your crochet hook should enter the hole in the scale from front to back.

There are many retailers of scales on the internet and it can be a bit confusing if you don’t know what you are looking for. I recommend size small scales from The Ring Lord. They are available at a fair price in a wide variety of colors, materials, and quantity. The link to the product page is below.
