The Split Rock Hat
The Split Rock hat can be knit with worsted weight or bulky. Stitch counts for newborn to adult sizes included. The instruction section will list how many stitches to cast on for bulky yarn with the worsted weight number in parenthesis behind it.
For safety reasons please don’t leave young ones unattended while wearing this hat due to the long braids.
This is a great bonnet for those who like to keep their ears covered without it feeling too tight on the ears.
Due to the split brim in the back this hat accommodates a wide range of head sizes. Allow for extra growing room by sizing up & then folding the brim.
The Split Rock Hat is worked flat for the brim and then joined for the body of the hat. I have included row and stitch counts for newborn to adult hats in both bulky weight (5) and worsted weight (4). If there is any difference in stitch counts the worsted weight information is in red and italics in case you aren’t printing in color.
Work the brim flat. Do NOT connect. You will knit back and forth on the circular needles with the working yarn on the left needle. If you don’t print in color I bolded the RS rows to serve the same purpose. All sizes begin at row 1 and continue until you reach the last row
of the size hat you are making.
Fleece brim instructions/photo tutorial included
This hat was tested used more than 11 different kinds of yarn by a pool of 20 knitters to make sure it is accurate, easy to follow, and will result in a beautiful textured brim. I included swatches for 4 different thicknesses of yarn because not all weights of yarn are actually the same thickness. You might need 4.5mm needles or you might go as high as 6mm needles depending on how thick or thin your yarn is.
The pattern uses knit, purl, and knit two together stitches. The decreases call for switching to double pointed needles which can be intimidating to beginners, but you can always decrease as much as you can with your circulars and then cinch a higher number of stitches. You can still make the hat, but I highly recommend watching a youtube video on how to use double pointed needles. They are a game changer in making the crown of the hat look its best.
