The Sun, The Moon, And The Stars
The sun, the moon, the stars. We take them for granted, these lights in our sky that brighten our days, guide sailors at night, change through the seasons, and even help us tell time. But how did they get there? What are they, really? Oh sure, science will tell us all sorts of provable things about these heavenly bodies, but a folk tale retelling of how the sun, the moon, and the stars were placed in the sky is far more entertaining.
The Sun, The Moon, And The Stars is a symmetrical triangular shawl that starts at one corner and works across to the far edge. The body of the shawl is worked in two colours of dk weight yarn in bands of solid garter stitch and mosaic colourwork. A lace border of fingering weight yarn is then worked on the two lower edges of the shawl. This border is picked up on one side, then worked across the live stitches of the body section.
Materials Needed: (yards in brackets are used for the swatch)
- @205 yards (plus @21 yards) of dk weight yarn (colour A)
- @215 yards (plus @21 yards) of dk weight yarn (colour B) note that colours A and B of the dk weight yarn should contrast strongly. If one of these colours is a variegated, ensure that all colours in the variegate contrast strongly with the second solid coloured yarn.
- @315 yards (plus @35 yards) of fingering weight yarn the fingering weight yarn may contrast or compliment or even match the dk weight yarns.
- 4mm (US 6) needles or size needed for gauge (straight needles may be used for the first four clues; for the final three clues a long circular needle is strongly recommended)
- stitch markers to mark motif repeats, edge stitches, and middle stitches of lace border
Gauge: measured over 4 inches
20 stitches x 50 rows in dk weight mosaic stitch
22 stitches x 30 rows in fingering weight stocking stitch
Gauge is given for the unblocked fabric because everyone’s rate of blocking tends to be different.
