A double thick potholder worked in straight rows for about half of the width, then pulled at the corners to form a square with the rows on a diagonal. If working in stripes, the stripes end up on the diagonal.

The size is about 6 inches square, but could easily be enlarged or shrunken by adding or subtracting number of stitches per row and number of rows.

Gauge is really unimportant, as long as the rows are worked until about half of the width.

The yarn called for is an acrylic yarn, but I recommend using a cotton yarn.

The patterns calls for 1 skein each of 2 colors, but could easily be altered to whatever suits your style.
