the “Teach a Friend to Knit” Scarf (or the “Red Scarf Project” Scarf) is very easy and based on a knit 2, purl 2 stitch pattern. I’m not claiming to have written this pattern, knit 2, purl 2 is as basic as it gets. What I am writing here is a basic guide to help you spread your love of knitting! You can teach a newbie how to cast on, knit, purl and cast off following this simple pattern and they’ll be able to create a scarf that is reversible, allows them to explore yarn textures, weights and colorways and they can enjoy showing off & wearing!

Skill Level: Beginner
Approximate Size: 4“ wide x 48“ long
Yarn: 1-2 skeins Sandrasingh.com 1 Ply Merino Worsted (215 yards/100 grams, 100% Uruguayan Merino Wool)
Needles: US 7 (4.5mm)
Gauge: Not Critical

Pattern Notes: Knit this scarf as long, short or as wide as you desire. For a wider scarf, or if you’re using a thinner weight yarn, simply add stitches in multiples of two. You can easily knit it in any weight yarn simply adjust your needle size, a smaller needle for a lace, sock, sport or DK weight yarn and larger needles for worsted or bulky weights. Though gauge is not critical I do recommend doing a swatch to help you determine a gauge and needle size that you like.

If you’re going to be teaching yourself to knit, bravo, it’s very doable and the website Knittinghelp.com offers a range of “how to” videos to help you every step of the way. I recommend beginning with their How to Knit: A Complete Introduction for Beginners Part 1.
