A timeless advent calendar you’ll knit once and cherish forever!

With four formats to suit your space and traditions, choose from vertical or horizontal layouts, each available with either 24 or 25 pockets. Both versions can be hung, and for a charming alternative, the horizontal calendar is also available in a standing style, perfect for display on a shelf or table.
Each pocket is made to be stuffed with delightful surprises and crocheted shut, making it the perfect way to prevent early peeking or sneaky snacking! For pet lovers, there’s an option to replace up to 4 of the regular motifs with adorable variations featuring cats and dogs. (Charts for two variations of each are included.)
This project includes a handy printing guide so you can print only what you need for your chosen layout.

Constructed with knitted colorwork, basic crochet, and some sewing, this advent calendar is a joy to make. Whether it’s for your kids, grandkids, partners, or friends, this timeless creation will become a cherished part of your holiday celebrations year after year.

The measurements provided are based on your gauge, but feel free to experiment with different gauges or yarn weights to create a unique size that fits your needs.

Width x height*
24-day horizontal - 92.5 x 38.5cm/ 36½ x 15¼ inches
24-day vertical - 46 x 74cm/18 x 29¼ inches

25-day horizontal - 102 x 38.5cm/40¼ x 15¼ inches
25-day vertical - 46 x 81cm/18 x 32 inches

height measurements include 2.5cm/1 inch for hanging

Yarn
Super Fine Cotton 8/4 - Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/4 - 1 ball = 50g (1.75 oz) = 160m (174 yds)

Colour A (Main Colour) - White (01) - 5 balls.
Colour B (Red Colourwork) - Tomato (40) - 4 balls.
Colour C (Green Colourwork) - Jungle Green (111) - 1 ball.

Note! You can make this calendar with other yarn thickness. If your gauge is different, it would simply make a calendar of a different size and might require a different amount of yarn.

Gauge
In colourwork with larger needles: 27 sts and 35 rows = 10 cm/4 inches (blocked).

Other Materials

  • 1.5 m/1.5 yards of fabric – 137 cm/54” width (non-stretch, structured fabric. I used cotton canvas with a fun pattern. If your fabric isn’t structured enough, add interfacing). Note: this amount is based on the gauge above; a larger gauge will require more fabric.
  • Matching thread
  • Plywood sheets or thick cardboard and wide adhesive tape
  • Wood/metal dowel as wide as the calendar (for hanging versions)
  • Ribbon (or make i-cords with leftover yarn)
  • 6–9 buttons

I hope this calendar brings you joy and becomes a core part of your Christmas traditions with your loved ones.
