The Undefined
You know those times when you’re asked to fill in ‘a little bit about yourself’? Job applications, social media profiles etc. How can we possibly confine our complex characteristics and individuality into a tiny space like that?! We all have a unique mix of interests, and I tend to shift from one obsession to another, depending on my mood and the environmental inspiration around me.
One day, in my mid-to-late twenties, I left the house in some comfy jeans, Thundercats trainers and my well-worn Red Hot Chili Peppers T-Shirt. At some point during the day I got chatting to someone. Admittedly I can’t recall the exact conversation, but I’ll never forget the reaction of the other party when I said I love to crochet. They were gob-smacked. Totally taken aback. Apparently I should have been decades older, wearing a floral nightdress, and I certainly should not enjoy rock ‘n’ roll music, haha. It did make me smile.
A few years later I was reading one of my favourite books and one particular paragraph resonated with me;
“Give up defining yourself - to yourself and to others.
You won’t die. You will come to life.
And don’t be concerned with how others define you.
When they define you, they are limiting themselves, so it’s their problem.”
- Eckhart Tolle, ‘A New Earth’
Inspired by this quote, this pattern was born… and so I sit, drink tea, and crochet, as I rock out to my favourite tunes!
