The Viipuri Dress
(Please see addendum.)
Inspired by a dress shown on a Hannah doll on this website. The dress was for sale, but no pattern was available as yet.
Needle recommended is 2.25mm/US1, but I used 2.00mm/US0 because I knit loosely. I used a needle one size larger for the skirt, but this is optional.
It’s easy to get the dress out of one 50g ball of Knit Picks Palette. A solid color yarn is recommended. Pattern won’t show up as well with self-striping or multi yarn. Kettle-dyed yarn is OK, but probably wasted on this project. You want the lace pattern to stand out.
3 buttons are needed, and nylon net or tulle, elastic or a girl’s sock, if you want to make the petticoat.
The bodice is knit flat. The sleeves and skirt can also be knit flat, but the sleeve ribbing will have to be completed during the sleeve divide row (Row 19), and the skirt will have to be worked back and forth with the WS working the stitches as they present (K the sts that look like K, P the sts that look like P and P the YOs as they occur).
Directions call for using Magic Loop, two circulars or 2 sets of dpns if you choose to work the skirt in the round. There are two versions of the skirt. One has increases every 4 rounds and one has increases every 6 rounds and is longer. the longer skirt uses almost the whole 50g of yarn, so follow the directions in the pattern to be sure you have enough to complete the longer skirt.
For the bodice to fit properly, it’s important to get gauge. Check as you go.
Waist shaping is obtained by borrowing sts at each end of the chart pattern taking them from the stockinette section.
There are optional row-by-row directions for knitters who find a chart challenging.
An optional net petticoat underneath is a nice touch, but the gathers should fall below the waistline of the dress.
Addendum: I have removed the original pattern and changed the lace motif for the bodice front and eliminated the swirled skirt because of a claim of prior rights to the design.
