The Wonderland Scarf
This is an advanced level knitting pattern! A strong knitting foundation, fair isle experience and the ability to easily learn new skills is strongly recommended. The double knit technique creates a beautiful double sided fabric with colorwork visible on both sides of the scarf, but this is an advanced technique that can be difficult to master. Once you understand it the technique is not much more challenging than fairisle, but it is a brain game and you have to retrain your brain to move your yarn a different way and think in stitch pairs. In the pattern are links to video tutorials that contain all of the information that you will need to learn. I also included written out instructions for every chart, so there are multiple options for reading the colorwork. By purchasing this pattern you receive 2 PDFs, PDF 1 contains the pattern instructions and PDF 2 contains all of the charts and written chart instructions. Both of these PDFs are designed to be printable.
MATERIALS:
-2.75 mm circular knitting needles or the size needed to obtain gauge (Note: 2 pairs of circular needles are recommended for an easy scarf assembly, but you can just as easily use 1 set of needles and extra yarn to temporarily hold the extra stitches)
-2 solid colors dk weight (#3) yarn - approximately 520 yds / 475 m of each color. My sample is made with “Baby bee: sweet delight” which is 377 yds / 345 m / 4 oz / 113 g per skein and I used the colors “angel” and “teal too!”. Note: it is important that you are using yarn that is traditionally considered “too thick” for the needle size you are using, so you do not want to use sock weight or a very light dk weight. I find that it creates much neater stitches when knitting with the double knit technique.
-Tapestry needle
-Scissors
-Knitting thimble (optional)
-2 place markers (optional)
GAUGE: 20 sts by 24 rows in double knit stockinette stitch = 3 by 3 inch (7.6 by 7.6 cm) unblocked. (When measuring your swatch you are only counting one color’s set of stitches)
SCARF DIMENSIONS: Width 8 in / 20.32 cm, Length 73 in / 185.42 cm. Note: the length can be adjusted.
