There and back again shawl
This shawl was created for Jamieson’s of Shetland using their Chunky Marl yarn. For this design I wanted to show that lace work can also be done in a heavier weight yarn – ideal if the thought of working in cobweb or lace yarn seems daunting or if you are new to lace knitting. The shawl starts by knitting a simple crescent shape – very quick to knit! Yarn overs at the edge of the crescent makes picking up stitches a doddle! Then a knitted on lace border is added – a hyperlink is included if you are unfamiliar with this technique. Finally stitches are picked up along the straight edge of the crescent and a garter stitch trim is added. The shawl is super quick to knit and takes only three balls of chunky yarn! The name comes from The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien and relates to the construction of the shawl – you knit to there and then back again (and then back again, again!).
Jamieson’s of Shetland Chunky Marl (120m/100g):
• x 3 balls of Cedar 1060
11 stitches to 15 rows over stocking stitch after washing and blocking. Gauge is not vital for this project although you may find you need more/less yarn if gauge is not met. Use a 6.5mm needle as starting point for checking gauge and adjust accordingly.
