Thine Own Top
About
A romantic, fitted, customizable top that you can truly make Thine Own. It’s worked top-down in the round and is made to measure based off of your own measurements (pattern includes a link to a spreadsheet that will calculate for you, or learn more about shaping by doing the calculations by hand!). It features picot folded hems, optional short-rows, vertical bust darts under the bust, hip shaping, and an optional curved front hem. The detachable sleeves are knitted flat separately and can be joined to the top with ribbon, i-cord, or buttons -- or you can lace ribbons through the button-holes along the top to give you endless strap options!
Sizing
Since this top is made-to-measure, you can knit it to your custom measurements. Measurements you will need to take include upper bust circumference, full bust circumference, waist circumference, hip circumference, and the distance from your upper bust to waist. The recommended amount of negative ease is 10-15%, so the top is formfitting.
Yarn & Gauge
I recommend choosing a yarn in fingering, sport, or DK weight, in a fiber blend that includes stretch. This top is made with negative ease, so choosing a yarn that includes wool or elastic is recommended.
My samples used:
- Berroco Renew (white sample) - (35% Viscose, 30% Wool, 30% Nylon, 5% Cashmere)
- Hedgehog Fibres Merino DK (purple sample) - (100% superwash merino wool)
- Knit Picks Gloss DK (black sample) - (70% merino, 30% silk)
The pattern uses your specific gauge, so you can choose the needle and yarn combination that you like the best!
Estimating yarn amounts
The amount of yarn you need will vary based on the yarn weight and your personal measurements. As a rough estimate for sport weight yarn, my testers used ~340yds for a 30” bust, and ~1150 yds for a 54” bust.
If you want a more precise measurement, I found my sample used ~1.1m of DK yarn per square inch. You can multiply (your full bust measurement) x (the length of the top you want) x 1.1m = ____ to find a rough estimate of how many meters of DK weight yarn you might need.
Skill Level
This top is best for intermediate knitters, since it includes quite a bit of shaping as well as working with your own custom measurements and gauge. That said, quite a few of my testers had never done any shaping, short rows, or custom fit garments before and were comfortable working with the pattern!
