Sock knitting patterns are, for the most part, just recipes. Swap in that heel, switch out that toe, tweak the cuff like this or that, and with a little practice you have your own custom sock pattern.

I enjoy knitting all kinds of socks, and this recipe is my go-to when making top-down, short row heel socks. Choose a snug ribbing or a looser ribbing. Choose a basic wrap and turn heel or a shadow wrap heel. Finish off with a round toe or a wedge toe.

Pros and cons are included at each step to help you decide which ribbing, heel, and toe will suit your style best. Knit both socks the same or knit one sock each way. See which you like best!

Sizes:
Adult Small / Medium / Large to fit a 8” 9”, or 10” (20.3, 22.8, or 25.4 cm) foot circumference. These are designed to have approximately 10% negative ease in foot circumference for a secure fit.

Yardage:
320-380 yards of fingering weight sock yarn. Add extra yardage if knitting a cuff longer than 5” or if you are knitting for a foot longer than 9”. Optional, 70-100 yards of a contrasting color for heels and toes.
