I love yarn bowls and I own a whole collection - wooden, ceramic and felt ones! I believe they are like project bags, you can never have too many!
I was at a craft show and a young couple popped in at my stall. The young man was wearing a very bright striped hat that caught my eyes and that’s probably because of the cool colours. However it had sort of a weird shape, and I remembered them mentioning it too: a bit stiff but so great for dreary cold winter days. And I thought that it would probably make a cool bowl. A while ago I knitted a hat and had that stiff feeling about it too (more likely because the bulky yarn I used was a bit coarse. So when I got home I searched for it and I chucked it in a hot wash. And the washing machine felting process worked beautifully, and it got to pretty much a perfect final dimension. So then I thought that I need to make some colorful options and the old thorn stitch is a perfect way to use one variegated yarn and a contrast solid color. Beautiful colorwork worked simply through some slip stitches.
pattern offers written instructions for knitting in the round.
Dimensions: prior felting: 21cm/8.25 in - diameter( wide) , 22.5cm/8.85in tall
After felting: 12cm/4.85 in wide, 12 cm/4.85 in tall (with brim folded)
there’s no science in felting this, just a wild pleasure in throwing something in hot water washing cycle on purpose! You might need to have it in the hot wash a few times, depending on your machine. It should work after the first time, just stretch and shape to the dimensions or desired size, I usually put a small plastic container inside to give it a shape whilst still damp and let it dry. But if you don’t think the felting process was complete, put in the next load of washing.
