Three Hares Tam
by Cathy Dobson
The three hares motif is an ancient symbol which has been used for centuries as an auspicious talisman. It is characterised by the hares each having two ears… but there being only three ears in total. While most commonly found in the British Isles and Northern Germany, the three hares motif also appears in cultures all along the old silk road, including China and Mongolia.
This is a one-size-fits-all pattern, knit bottom up in the round using stranded technique. The tam fits a head circumference of 24 inches/61 cm and is 4 inches/10 cm tall. The crown is 10 inches/26cm across.
