This is an introductory project for one- and two-color brioche knitting. I use it to teach at my LYS, Wollhaus in Pasadena, CA. The PDF instructions include a glossary, photos, and a detailed description of brioche stitch structure with live links to more information or videos.

Using a stretchy cast-on, the cowl starts out in one color, Color A, transitions to two-color, using Colors A & B, then finishing in one color, Color B. For best results, select 2 colors with high contrast in hue or value. Most worsted-spun worsted-weight yarns will work for this project.

You will need 120 yards in each of 2 colors. I used very nearly the entire skeins of Woolfolk Woolstok. (If you are a loose knitter, its fine to use a size 7 needle. Do not go up a size though, the stitch is naturally pretty loose.) Woolstok colors used in my samples are Midnight Sea with Golden Meadow (blackish blue and chartreuse), and Midnight Sea with Rusted Roof (blackish blue and orange; school colors for my BiL!)

This cowl is approximately 8” deep and ~40” circumference, relaxed. The brioche stitch is quite elastic: This cowl can be worn simple, twisted to make a scarf/neck & ear warmer/head cover, or pulled down as a shoulder warmer.

Additional materials: 1 Closed st marker for BOR, 1–3 Locking st marker(s), Tapestry needle for ends.
