Thrills with Frills
Have some fun with Thrills with Frills
Shawl designs have changed incredibly over the last few years. Traditional shapes such as triangles, crescents, circles, semi circles, and squares have been replaced with newer, more spectacular designs. A good example of this is Thrills with Frills. The photographs show just how quirky these new shawls can be.
A big plus for this shawl is that it can be knitted with any yarn, regardless of the yarn weight. To get the maximum effect all you need to do is choose two contrasting yarns of the same weight: two solids, one solid or semi solid combined with a color gradient, or two color gradients that go well together as a pair but that are distinctive enough to make eye catching stripes. How much yarn you will need will depend on the tightness of your knitting and the weight of your yarn. You will need at least 600 yards of each color if you knit loosely. I prefer to knit a bit tighter with thinner needles and for that I needed 700 yards of each color for a smaller version (made with Zauberball Cotton by Schoppel - 62”/158cm wingspand - 21.5”/53cm depth) and 800 yards of each color for a medium sizes version (made with Wollbonbon Merino 4 ply - 56”/142cm wingspan - 23”/59cm depth). The larger version presented in the pictures was knitted with Moca Cotton Gradients by Monsoon Calamity and for this I used 1050 yards of each color (75”/191cm wingspan - 28.5”/72cm depth).
Thrills with Frills will in fact give you two shawls for the price of one. It is fully reversible and each side is guaranteed to give you a completely different look. One side enhances one color whereas the second colour dominates on the other side. This gives you a lot more opportunity to blend to it with the clothes in your wardrobe.
Thrills with Frills is a seamless modular knit. Although the shape looks very intricate, the principle is easy to memorise. After knitting the first few modules you will easily be able to continue without having to continuously consult the pattern. You’ll find the instructions for the first round of modules in written and charted form, enriched with ample photo tutorials on the techniques of shaping and joining the modules. Those who feel safer with instructions rather than following a principle will find a helpful table to guide you through your whole project.
