Worked in Scheepjes Whirl Pistachi Oh So Nice, the Through the Pinewoods Shawl is inspired by the pinewoods that run along the coast from Wells to Holkham, bordering the beach. The colours, worked from the centre of the ball out, change from lightest green through emerald and khaki to chocolate. It suggests the light, bright, sun drenched leaves at the top of the trees, with the colour slowly saturating as the light filters through the canopy and down to the ground. It’s the memory of peaceful moments in shaded glades deep in the woods.

Of course, the pattern will work with Whirl in any colour and also with other yarns. 4 ply yarn is most suitable. The amount required will vary but, as a guide, each Whirl ball is 225g and measures 1000m. The ball band states 455m per 100g. DK yarn would also be suitable, as long as it has plenty of drape and you use the appropriate hook (1 or 2 sizes larger than usually recommended for DK).

Achieving the exact gauge is not essential, as long as your stitches and tension are consistent and the work sits neatly without developing frills or puckers. (Small puckers can be teased out during blocking.)

The size can be increased/decreased to suit larger or smaller quantities of yarn. Notes are included on the pattern.
