Thrum Away Mittens
Thrummed mittens have an over 200 year old history in Newfoundland, Canada. They were created to keep the hands of fishermen warm and dry in one of the harshest inhabited climates in the world. The soft wisps of pure wool roving on the inside provide warming insulation, while the tightly knit mitten is virtually water proof when knit with a good, sturdy 100% wool.
Thrum Away Mittens is a little play on words. In the Maritimes, anyone from the elsewhere is referred to as being “from away”. These mittens are a little bit different, with construction techniques borrowed “from away”. They have an easy-to-make, afterthought thumb and unlike the traditional mittens, the thrums go all the way to the top of both the hand and the thumb. The rounded top means and lack of a thumb gusset makes it possible to wear on either hand, so there is no fiddling about when it’s freezing outside!
The pattern is also easy to adapt to fit practically everyone and they make a wonderful, heart and hand warming gift.
