After searching for a while for the perfect thrummed mitten pattern, I sat down to develop my own! Quick to knit and fun to wear, thrummed mittens are maybe the perfect winter garment. These mittens feature thrums of unspun wool roving knit into the mitten, creating sweet Vs or hearts on the outside, and a dense, sheepskin-like lining inside.

This pattern is written to include a “sore thumb” style gusset, which I feel fits most hands better than afterthought-style thumbs. The pattern includes a tutorial in how to make and work thrums. Thrum placement is given via both written instructions and a chart, and placement is noted throughout the mitten instructions--including gusset increases and closure decreases.

Sizing:
child (adult small, adult medium, adult large); fits hand circumference of 6” (7”, 7.25”, 8.5”).

Materials:

  • Approx. 100 (130, 160, 200) yards of worsted-weight, non-superwash wool. Kelbourne Woolens Germantown in Jade, shown.
  • 3-4 oz of non-superwash wool roving or top. (Smaller sizes will use less.)
  • US size 4 and US size 5 double-pointed needles, or long circular for magic loop
  • Stitch markers
  • Short length of waste yarn
  • Tapestry needle

Notes on yarn and wool choices:

  • Choose a non-superwash worsted-weight wool, and a non-superwash wool roving or top.
  • Mittens should be knit at a much denser gauge than you would normally work a worsted-weight yarn to make a thick, stiff fabric. If you are substituting a yarn, or unsure of your gauge, go down 2-3 needle sizes than what is called for on the ball band.
  • Thrummed mittens are knit slightly larger than normal mittens to make room for all of that extra wool! To make a better fitting mitten despite the larger size, work a slightly longer cuff.
