This hat is designed to be very warm - chunky yarn is knit firmly on a 4.5mm circular needle to keep the wind and weather out and to keep warmth in, thrums line the whole of the inside of the crown as well as the sides of the hat, the top of the head being the major area for heat loss.
For instructions in making large and small adult, child and baby sizes, see this blog.
The pattern is an easy knit, by the time you have finished the hat you will be skilled in making thrums. Though time consuming, they add pattern, colour and texture as well as warmth and lend themselves to a whole range of effects. Thrumming is fun, whether you choose to use plain white Merino wool tops, dye your own with plant dyes or treat yourself to a fabulous Indie Dyed braid with silk in the blend.
This design was created for the December page of the Twelve Months of Plant Dyes 2019 Calendar and as the year goes by, I am hoping to see what beauties all the Calendar Dyers create.
