Thrummed mittens are mittens made with tufts of roving (or fleece) knitted into them. They originated in Newfoundland and are fun to make and very warm to wear and make fantastic gifts. They are made using double point needles or you can use the Magic Loop method or 2 circulars.

The yarn I have used in the mittens shown is Manos del Uruguay Wool Classica, Steadfast Fibers Wonderful Wool and Knitpicks Bulky. Also used (but not shown), Malabrigo, Auracania Chunky, Classic Elite Montera and Cascade 128.

The roving I use is either merino or Blue-faced Leicester (BFL) from a few different sources … some of the fabulous hand-painted ones were bought from Greenwood Fiberworks on Etsy, some from Hello Yarn and some are from Mielke’s Fiber Arts.

The pattern is written for 2 sizes … child small and medium. Child large would be very close to the adult small. Additional sizes can be obtained by using either a US 8 or US 9 needle or adding or subtracting 4 stitches.

With the purchase of the mitten pattern you will receive a free thrummed hat pattern written in 3 different sizes (child, woman and man).

I have also played a little with different “cuff” types. Either casting on in a contrast color and purling one row or doing a braid as shown in the aqua mitten.
