Pattern Description from Cast On, February-April 2010: “Experimenting with the Buttonhole Slip Stitch used in these socks can be a particularly fun way to play with color. The slip stitch allows you to work color into your pattern without changing colors in a given round. Why not make three? Each sock would have a different main color (color A, B, C). Then alternate the contrast pattern stitch colors. You would then have three different pairs of socks to wear! Another alternative would be to choose one of Lorna’s laces multi-colored Shepherd Sock Yarns for your alternate color. Using only a Main Color and a coordinated multi to substitute for both color B and C in the pattern, see what color of the multi pops through the ‘buttonhole’ in each repeat. Experiment with more than two contrast colors and create a real rainbow effect.”

Materials:

• Lorna’s Laces SHEPHERD SOCK (2oz/56.7g, 215yds/196m, 80% Superwash Wool, 20% Nylon): 1 skein ea Growth (A), Firefly (B), Courage (C)
• Two size a (2.25mm) 24” (60.9cm) circular needle or size needed to obtain correct gauge
• Tapestry needle

Gauge: In Stockinette st, 8 sts & 10 rnds = 1”/2.5 cm. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Designer Note: For mix and match socks: if making one pair the same, 2 skeins of main Color are needed. Instructions are written for 2 circular needles (be sure to make adjustments in arranging stitches if you are using double points).
