Tidal is a square poncho, knitted from the top (or centre) down (or out), and features ripples of texture and colour in a broad band around it. It can be worn with a square neck or a V neck. I called this poncho Tidal because I knitted mine in sea colours, and because of the ripple effect of the different methods of knitting stocking stitch.

Pinned out square, each side of the poncho measures approx 46” / 117cm. Worn with a square neck, it measures approx 20” / 50cm to the straight edge. Worn with a V neck, the depth to the point is approx 28” / 70cm.

Baa Ram Ewe Titus is (sadly) no longer available - I’ve given as much information as I can about quantities of 4 ply yarn needed in the pattern. Ideally, I’d have liked to have another skein of my main colour……. and knitted the lower section a little deeper. Here, briefly, are my calculations for what you’ll need:

Main Colour - approx 200g / 640m
White - approx 120g / 390m
Lighter Contrast Colour 1 (light grey-green) - approx 30g / 100m
Lighter Contrast Colour 2 (medium grey-blue) - approx 30g / 100m
Darker Contrast Colour 1 (bright turquoise) - approx 20g / 65m
Darker Contrast Colour 2 (dark blue) - approx 20g / 65m

My knitterly caution means I always like to have more than the suggested amounts, but I hope this gives you a good enough guide for working out what you could use from your wool hoard, or for purchasing more lovely yarn!

It’s handy to have four 4mm / 80cm circular needles, and a moveable stitch marker (split ring).

The increases are worked with simple yarn over eyelets at the corners, and the texture is created with garter stitch, and three variations of stocking stitch - double yarn over knit, straightforward and “miss one knit one” - these in turn give deep, medium and shallow sections, which put me in mind of the rhythm of the tides……

I hope you enjoy knitting and wearing your poncho!
