Tie It In a Bow Beanie
Sometimes it’s fun to be quirky and standout. And- even better- sometimes YOU are the best present you can give anyone! Why not take it literal and look cute in a bow?
Notes
- Please read through the entire pattern before starting.
- The pattern uses US terminology/abbreviations.
- I am left handed, so please keep that in mind when looking at the photos.
- I recommend using 4 different strands of the secondary color to help decrease on the tension of pulling the yarn too tight. You are welcome to use only 1 strand and carry color throughout, but be careful when carrying yarn so you don’t pull too tight.
- It does not need to have a neat or clean look on the inside of the hat.
- Need some general sewing skills (for pinning together and sewing bow).
- This pattern utilizes waistcoat stitches. You may use single crochet instead, but it will not look as clean or have the same effect.
Gauge
Gauge will be different for the hat versus the bow. The
gauge pattern will remain the size for the hat, but
the measurements will differ depending on size of hat being
made. Gauge is VERY important. DO NOT skip making a gauge swatch! Tension should be very LOOSE.
7 sc sts x 8 rows
Child= 5cm x 5cm
Ages 11 & up= 6cm x 6cm
Adult= 6.5cm x 6.5cm
Tension for the bow is different- it should be tight. Tight tension helps it hold better shape for the curved bow look. If gauge is measuring too big, try adjusting your tension rather than hook size. Using size G hook (4.25mm).
7 sc x 8 rows = 4cm x 4cm
Materials
Worsted medium weight yarn (#4) in 2 desired colors
Primary color: 70-100g
Secondary color: 20-50g
Crochet hooks: Hook size for the bow is G (4.25mm). Size for the hat body/brim will defer depending on desired hat size. The hook used for the hat brim is one size smaller than hat body as indicated below:
Child= Size I (5.5mm)/ Size H (5.0mm)
Ages 11 & up= Size J (6.0mm)/ Size I (5.5mm)
Adult= Size K (6.5mm)/ Size J (6.0mm)
Darning needle to hide those pesky loose ends!

Pattern gives detailed instructions for special stitches (waistcoat stitches, invisible join, and standing double crochet. The more complicated sections of the pattern, primarily the bow, include detailed step-by-step photos with captions.
