“Tiilitalo” is Finnish for “Brick House” and this is exactly what I had in mind when making them - bricks and mortar to build something cozy.

These mittens are knit in the round and the fabric is toasty because of the combination of the simple two-color pattern with the ridges. This design uses my favorite style of thumb gusset - created with a single increase each round, placed in the palm of the hand. The resulting shape mimics the natural resting posture of the hand - the palm slightly cupped, the thumb resting slightly above and to the inside. Very comfortable!

Sizes Small, Medium and Large measure 11, 11.5 and 12” in overall length and 6.5, 7, 8” for the hand circumference on the straight finger section. I’ve provided for 4” cuffs - the most frequent feedback I get about mittens is that the cuffs are skimpy so I made them extra-deep.

The use of multi-color yarns makes it interesting to knit - you just want to keep going to see what the next color will look like. The pattern includes tips on getting long-color-change yarns to match from one mitten to the next.

For the white and the turquoise versions pictured, I used Limitless for the main color and Red Heart Unforgettable for the Contrast.

The dark blue and dark brown versions are made from Patons Decor and Unforgettable. Decor makes awesome mittens!

I admit it: I became slightly addicted to making these once I got started. They are a great small project and once I had the pattern learned, it only took about 10 hours in total to make a pair.

I hope you have as much fun with them as I am!
