Time and Change Hat
This hat is inspired by the structure of the neuron, the physics that governs our understanding of the passage of time and the work of physicist Carlo Rovelli. In our current understanding, the direction of time is governed by the law which states that heat cannot pass from a cold to a hot body, and it is this unavoidable passage that enables us to differentiate the past from the future. This law of increasing entropy and the impact it has on the neurons of our bodies allow us to experience the passage of time and live within a changing world. The universe we live in is one that is defined by change, of evolution of growth and decay and with this design I wanted to capture the inevitably of change, the importance of learning to move with the evolution of life.
Materials:
• One 3.25mm / US size 3 circular needle, 40cm / 16” in length, or size needed to meet the required gauge.
• One 2.75mm / US size 2 circular needle, 40cm / 16” in length, or a US size smaller than needle size used to obtain gauge.
• One 3.25mm / US size 3 circular needle, at least 80cm / 32” in length for magic loop or one set of 3.25mm / US size 3 DPNs, or size needed to meet the required gauge.
• Optional: Stitch markers, 18, one of which is used to mark the beginning of round.
• Tapestry needle for sewing in threads and blocking materials.
• Fingering weight yarn in three colours, approximately 130m / 142yds of the Main Colour, 50m / 55yds of Contrast Colour 1 and 20m / 22yds of Contrast Colour 2. Sample shown in Miss la Motte Lustre, 50% Superwash merino, 15% kid mohair, 15% mulberry silk and 20% polyamide, approximately 400m per 100g skein, for Main Colour and Big Fox Yarn Perfect Sock, 75% Merino, 25% Nylon, approximately 360m per 100g, for Contrast Colour’s 1 and 2, shown in colourways After Party Dark (CC1) and Pearl (CC2).
• Optional: Pom pom. Sample pom pom is a Mix and Match TOFT Alpaca pom pom, shown in colour Coral.
Gauge:
30 stitches and 34 rows = 10cm / 4” in stranded knitting, worked in the round and blocked. Knitting to gauge ensures that your knitted item is the correct size, and ensures that yardage requirements match those stated in the pattern.
Sizes:
One size: 48cm / 19” in circumference, measured flat at the widest part of the hat. The hat measures 21cm / 8.5” from the crown to cast on edge, measured without the pom pom. Intended to be worn with 7.5cm – 12.5cm / 3” – 5” negative ease.
