Triple-stranded DNA occurs in certain circumstances in nature, as a structure that can be transitory or stable. For example, the gene editing technology CRISPR involves a “guide” RNA strand binding to a homologous stretch of double-stranded DNA and thereby directing a nuclease to cut the DNA at a particular spot along that stretch. But in science fiction, triple-helical DNA is the structure for certain time-traveling alien genomes.
