Tintern beret
The design for this beret was inspired by a visit to Tintern Abbey (Wales) with its intricate stonework, at a time when the Abbey was lit up for Remembrance Day.
The beret is worked in the round in stranded colourwork, using 5 and 6 mm circular needles and 6 mm double-pointed needles. The tension is 20 sts to 10 cm. The finished beret measures about 23 cm, rim to crown, and 46 cm round the rim. Due to the pattern repeat, it comes in one size only.
The yarn used for this set was from the West Yorkshire Spinners Aire Valley Aran range: dark grey for the background, and a contrast of fun self-striping yarn in red. A 100 g ball of each colour was used, with some to spare.
There is a matching Tintern mitten set, and the whole set can be worked from 200 g of yarn, one ball of each colour.
The whole set was originally published in “Knit Now” magazine issue 125, using Rowan Kid Classic (2 balls of 50 g Cherry Red as main colour and 2 balls of 50 g Cement as contrast). Rowan are gratefully acknowledged for yarn support. Using Rowan Kid Classic, a full set as well as a set with the colours reversed can be worked from 200 g yarn.
