This design was originally inspired by my appreciation of vintage quilt designs, particularly postage stamp quilts made from small squares of fabric. I love how even the simplest design can lend itself to a vast array of interpretations and colour arrangements, although I have always been especially fond of this classic chequerboard pattern.

The pattern is written using standard UK terms and includes clear charts for the key elements of the design as well as a colour placement diagram for the front of the cushion.

GUAGE
Each tiny square motif should measure approx. 4cm (1,1/2 inches) across.
21 stitches x 12 rows in treble stitches = 10cm (4 inches).

YARN
Rowan Baby Silk Merino, two in 670 / Snowdrop, three in 674 / Shell Pink, one each in 688 / Sunshine, 692 / Leaf, 687 / Strawberry, 694 / Frosty, 672 / Dawn, 696 / Lake.

MATERIALS
5 x 1.5cm (5/8 inch) buttons.
30 x 40cm (12 x 16 inches) cushion.
