F for her fan, to use at the ball.

One of my favorite childhood books was “A is for Annabelle” by Tasha Tudor. As my mom would read the simple alphabet book over and over, I remember wishing that my grandmother had such an elegant doll with all her fascinating accessories.

This sock pattern was designed in reference to the part of the book which talks about the doll’s fan, which is to be used at the ball. To Use at the Ball is a toe-up sock with a heel flap and gusset. The side of the sock is adorned with a fun lace pattern that resembles a fancy fan. On the back of the sock, just above the heel-flap, is a different lace motif that resembles a fully spread out fan.

While I love to create my own stitch patterns for my designs - as I did with the lace fan that runs up the side of this sock - I was also inspired by Zealot and her work with the Russian Lace Mystery Stitch. With her permission, the lace detail on the back of the sock incorporates some of her reverse engineering of this stitch. The lace pattern used on the back of these socks is not a direct copy of her work, but it is very much inspired by her work.

This is the fourth and final pattern in a collection that features whimsical designs based on the book “A is for Annabelle.” These designs incorporate both cables and lace in fun and interesting ways.

This pattern is written in sizes XS, S, M, L and XL to fit a foot circumference of approximately 7.5”, 8”, 8.5”, 9” and 9.25” (19, 20.5, 21.5, 22.5, 23.5 cm). The pattern is written for 56, 60 ,64, 68 and 72 sts.

You will need approximately 60-90 grams (250 – 380 yds or 230 – 350 meters) of fingering weight yarn.
