This cowl features cables on both sides of the work, so you can fold it down your neck or keep it up, and it will still look the same. It includes several types of cables, of 4 and 6 stitches, knit, purl and mixed.

It is worked entirely in the round. It can also be easily made into a poncho (the pattern includes instructions for adapting it).

All my patterns are using Calibri font size 13 in black on white, so they are accessible and easy to read on different screens and when printed. All abbreviations and acronyms are explained in the pattern.

You will get a PDF document that includes:
• Written instructions in English, using US, UK and metric measurements and needle sizes.
• Each size is on a separate page, thus easy to follow.
• Tips for making the cowl narrower or wider than the two sizes.
• Tips for making the cowl shorter (just below the neck) or longer (for example, as a poncho).

Size
• Size S / M (fits busts from 75 to 100 cm / 29.5 to 39.5 in)
• Size L / XL (fits busts from 100 to 120 cm / 39.5 to 47 in)
Can be made smaller or large than these two sizes (advice included in the pattern).

Recommended yarn

For the cowl in the photos, I used Lana Grossa “Colors for You”, a mix of wool (55%) and polyacrylic (45%), a chunky weight yarn that I worked with 6mm needles (US 10 / UK 4). I made Size S/M, for which I needed two cakes of 100 grams each, with a total yardage of about 360 metres (390 yards).

I recommend yarn that is somewhat elastic, so that you can slip the cowl over the head and still have it snug around the neck. Chunky wool (superwash or not) or acrylic should work fine. Avoid yarn that is likely to shrink during washing, or knit a swatch.

Gauge: 12 stitches and 18 rows per 10 cm (per 4 inches) in stockinette stitch. Swatching is highly recommended.

You will need

• Knitting needles of 6mm needles (US 10 / UK 4) or size needed to obtain gauge.
• Circular needles of 40 cm (16 in) or double-pointed needles (DPNs) are recommended for the top part (the neck).
• Longer circular needles – 80 cm (32 in) or 100 cm (40 in) – will be necessary for the body of the cowl.
• Cable needle same size or one size smaller than the knitting needles.
• Optional: Tapestry needle to weave in the ends.
• Approximately 360-400 metres (390-440 yards) of chunky yarn for a S/M sized cowl and 400-450 metres (440-500 yards) for a L/XL sized cowl. If you intend to make it longer, e.g. as a poncho, plan on 2-3 times the yardage above.

Enjoy making this lovely and cozy cowl!
